Four of the Final Five. Do you know what they'll do next?
Another Regular Feature for Look Again.
What is a Cylon?
Is it metal and bolts strung together by electrical wires and screws, or merely flesh and bone, disguised to be human, yet sometimes more humane than it's doppelganger?
In this, the final article before tonight's Battlestar Galactica premiere, it's time to look at the Cylons. Machines that were made to look, feel, and act like humans, but as it turns out, the human race ended up with much more than what they bargained for.
Beware, here there be spoilers.
When we're first introduced to the Cylons through 6, we learn a few but fundamental things:
1. There are many copies of the same model
2. When their bodies are destroyed they're consciousness are downloaded into a new body, so they cannot die unless they're too far away from a resurrection ship.
3. They believe in one god.
So who is the Final Cylon? That remains a mystery. Recently, a photograph was released with the main characters positioned much in the same way as Da Vinci's The Last Supper. Eleven characters are there. The one missing is supposed to be the Final Cylon, but this still leaves a many number of candidates. Among the remaining cast of characters - Callie Tyrol, Anastasia "Dee" Adama, or Tom Zarek. And how does Hera, Sharon and Carl's baby, factor into all of this? So many questions and only twenty episodes to go.
Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica premieres tonight, or see it early today at 11AM C/ 12PM E on SCI-FI.COM.

Don't know what the frak I'm talking about, here's a recap of the last three seasons.
And don't forget to watchlist nvbsg for more articles on Battlestar Galactica including season 4 recaps.
I know it premiers tonight but I'm forcing myself to wait until it hits an HD channel. I've been watching the reruns in HD on UHD and it completely blows Sci-Fi away!
:) I have very little will power as well but I'm keeping myself occupied by building/finishing my basement and studying. Hopefully I'll be finished with both by the time it comes out. I'll be able to watch in my makeshift (aka DIY aka I have no idea what I'm doing) home theater with no scholastic distractions. lol
It looks awesome in HD. I can't wait for the surround sound effect.
I couldn't force myself to wait. I re-watch each season in HD (on Universal HD,) as well as on DVD once it comes out...but there's no way I could wait until after the season to even *start* watching.
I've never understood why they don't do a simulcast on Universal HD. Sci-Fi could use it as an opportunity to advertise their channel.
You don't get SciFiHD?
I love my SciFi HD :-)
You don't get SciFiHD?
No. I'm stubborn. The only way I could get SciFi HD is if I ditch my DirecTivo and switch to the crappy DirecTV HD DVR. I'm not willing to give up the 30 minute buffer on *both* tuners, better UI, better FF/snapback, etc. just to get extra HD channels. I'd rather have a much better experience with the channels I already have, so I'm sticking with Tivo.
I don't believe SCIFI HD is available where I live.
We have it in most area's of Seattle via Comcast, but the SciFi addition is a fairly new update that I was not aware of until I saw it on the SciFi website. And I did not want to go the DirectTV route.

You two rock. I haven't even watched the show (not that I'm against it or anything, it's just that it was against something else I watched during Season 1 and I missed it), but damn, this article series is great from start to finish.
This show is great, really got into it last year. Didn't realize it starts to night, Yeah, popcorn and pizza are back night.
I had no willpower and just finished watching it on SciFi.com. Aside from some bandwidth issues (I had to drop it down to the low-res version to stop the glitches) it was thoroughly enjoyable. The Iron Man trailers were nice too. Gee, I managed to comment without any spoilers!
Ry and I are going to watch it later tonight, we're exercising willpower.
Yaz, thanks for the writeup here - it seems to cover all the bases, here's hoping MSNBC picks it up!
On monday I'll do a recap of tonight's episode and on Thursday Yasmin will publish a feature on a To Be Determined topic. Thanks for reading, folks!
Grats! Come June you'll have some pocket change!
I have always felt that Leoben, besides being a little on the creepy side, did have different personalities. The Leoben captured who Starbuck interrogated was the same version as the one who kept her as a prisoner on New Caprica. The other Leoben's we were introduced to were different versions, and different agendas.
My only other comment is about the Sharon models. "Boomer" has become distant and more hateful about the humans, when you thought she'd never turn into a bad guy. "Athena" seems to have overcome her cylon programming and can continue to pilot a raptor and protect the fleet. She's a better soldier than some of the humans.
I believe Jayadalla was referring to the Leoben that Kara interrogated, not the Leoben that was found at the munitions storage facility in the miniseries.
Well I did it. Threw chance to the wind and skipped it. I had the shivers last night but I survived. I really hope UHD picks this up or the local cable company gets Sci-Fi in HD. No word as of yet on the UHD boards......
UHD has always picked up BSG...after the end of the season.
There are 12 Cylon models, they seem to worship one God, the picture was based on Da Vinci's Last Supper, Caprica Six has often told Baltar she was an angel sent from God to help him... fairly obvious parallels.
I think Madame President is the final Cylon. She is the one who has been insisting on a certain path to Earth all along, because of the "prophecies" and religious writings, and now is totally rejecting any possible changes to her path based on what Kara might have learned/discovered. It's clear she sees Kara as a threat to her authority regarding Earth... More significant, I think, is the fact that she is the one who had the vision in the opera house with Caprica Six and Hera. And don't forget how baby Hera's blood seemed to cure her cancer... Now she is making progress with Adama, they are becoming closer and even intimate, she is "temporarily" staying in his quarters! At the start they were often on opposing sides, but she has been slowly winning him over. When D'Anna saw the final Cylon at the temple, she was very surprised. I doubt this would have been true had it been Kara or even Apollo. SO I think Adama and the Laura are the only possible candidates, and I vote for Laura. Another factor is that the female Cylons seem to be the ones really in control of the Cylon agenda.
I totally agree with you. We've been assuming that Roslin is the one foretold in the prophesies and therefore can't be the last Cylon. However, it has to be someone who's past is unknown... and we know that the Cylons can get sick.
It can't be Adama or Lee because they're father and son. If it's Adama, then Lee has to have been a half Cylon and that doesn't work with the storyline, that Hera is the first Human-Cylon child. So far, anyone that turned out to be a Cylon doesn't have a family history that could be confirmed with a living bloodline.
We don't know anything about Roslin's past, and as the author of this article says, Tory seems to just do everything Roslin tells her, and we know Tory is a Cylon. Roslin comes across as kind but we've seen that she can be quite heavy-handed when the need arises. I think we'll see at some point that Kara has an illness and she ends up being the one foretold in the prophecies, in the Book of Pithia, and the belief that Roslin is the foretold leader will turn out to be a red herring.
Oh and Kara was the one who actually went back to Caprica to get the arrow and she's always been considered a leader. So she is a leader who helped guide the way to Earth (by getting the arrow). Only @!$%#ty thing is, I don't want to see her die before they reach Earth. :(
I like that theory. It might also explain how she managed to *miss* shooting Kara at nearly point blank range in last night's episode.
Wow, I don't know what to think! Are the writers just messing with us or what? I can not believe that the 4 they revealed to be Cylons are right. Just can't be, after what they have been thru?! Now Laura Roslin as I Cylon I could believe, considering her visions and such. Even Starbuck with her drawings and all that, she is even plausible but Chief Galen??, Saul Tigh after being held prisoner & having his eye yanked out??!!!!, Sam Anders after fighting in the resistance?? Tory?? Just doesn't make sense. And Baltar most of all I would consider a Cylon. And if Hera is supposed to be so special what about the Chief's son. If the Chief is a Cylon why aren't the Cylons all a twitter about his son? I absolutely love this show but boy do they throw a lot at you that doesn't make sense. Guess that is what keeps us watching! :-) I know I will be sad when it is over but I intend to enjoy it while it is still on.
yasmin:
The 6 aboard Pegasus was never Admiral Cain's lover. Quite the contrary.
6 was tortured by Cain for information --brutally.
The comment was made by 6 when she shot Cain - was 'ironic' - not factual.... "You're not my type"
when Cain said - "Frak you" upon finding 6 in the Admirals quarters. It was revenge - pure, sweet and apropos.
didn't see Razor, did you, Steven?
The six was originally her lover before the crew realized she was a cylon. That's why Cain treated her so savagely - not only was the cylon sneak attack fresh on her mind but she was personally betrayed. It was grudge-rape ordered by the admiral that the six was experiencing.
From what episode or event do you back this relationship up -- I don't remember any ep.
If I am wrong - I stand corrected. My apologies to all.
@Steve in Toronto:
It was in Razor, which aired (and was released on DVD) after Season 3, but before the premier of Season 4.
Battlestar Galactica: Razor was an oasis for BSG fans--when the double-length episode aired in November 2007, it was the only new material broadcast during the 12-month gap between seasons 3 and 4. But although it sets up some events in season 4, chronologically Razor is a prequel taking place within season 2, when Galactica had unexpectedly met up with a fellow Battlestar, Pegasus.
One typo. In your description of Saul Tigh, you say D'Anna asked for forgiveness. Clearly, you meant Ellen.
Don't think so. She is referring to when D'anna saw the final five asked for forgiveness. It is widely believed Saul was who she saw.
